PVA – Body Bag – Alkaline Hydrolysis
Our newest product, Classic PVA Alkaline Hydrolysis body bags are a versatile water soluble body bag with a straight zipper. Designed specifically to work in Alkaline Hydrolysis, this bag is recommended for use in the process chamber. Alkaline Hydrolysis is considered a more ecologically friendly alternative to traditional cremation for the disposal of human remains.
What is alkaline hydrolysis?
It is a gentler, green alternative to flame-based cremation used for both humans and animals. Flame-based cremations run approximately 1600°F – 1800°F; alkaline hydrolysis runs approximately 150°F – 350°F.
Alkaline Hydrolysis is also known as flameless, hydro & water cremation, aquamation, biocremation & resomation. This sterile process uses water flow, alkaline & heat to accelerate natural decomposition, leaving no DNA or tissue after the process is finished. A white ash is the result once cremation is complete and the ash can be placed in an urn or alternative green funeral option just as with standard cremation.
Classic Plastics has been a body bag fabricator for more than 25 years, using only the best quality materials & construction methods to exceed all standards. All of our vinyl & polyethylene body bags are sewn & seal reinforced with a heat seal bar ensuring consistent durability. We have extensive experience in cadaver body bag construction using numerous materials – such as polyolefins, polyethylene, nylon reinforced poly material, PVC, mesh PVC, PVA & bioplastics. Our newly developed PVA Alkaline Hydrolysis bag was developed with testing in the flameless water cremation systems & we see this trend continuing to grow as green funerals become more desired.

Made of dissoluble materials, our Classic PVA is designed to process in any alkaline hydrolysis system. We produced the bag in a human size with both a zipper closure and adhesive closure option. We have found both preferences to be popular. We have also produced one animal size to start as the pet machines become more popular. This bag has the adhesive closure which makes it easier to compact the bag where desired.
Our three stock PVA bag options are:
- CP-BBPVA-PET.28.48
- PVA – alkaline hydrolysis animal bag
- 28″ x 48″, L-shaped adhesive closure
- CP-BBPVA-Adhesive
- PVA – alkaline hydrolysis body bag
- 32″ x 88″, L-shaped adhesive closure
- CP-BBPVA-Zip
- PVA – alkaline hydrolysis body bag
- 32″ x 88″, C-zipper design along edges
Primary Application: Our Alkaline Hydrolysis bags are mainly used in process chambers with a temperature over 150°F or higher. Crematories use this body bag for alkaline hydrolysis/bio cremation because this process results in smaller amounts of pollutants released in the air than fire cremations. Less fuel is needed to run these machines, reducing the overall carbon footprint.
Product FAQs
Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) is a unique, synthetic water-soluble polymer. Unlike standard transport bags, the Classic PVA bag is designed specifically to dissolve completely without leaving a trace of plastic residue behind.
When exposed to the liquid flow, alkaline chemicals (potassium or sodium hydroxide), and elevated heat inside a resomation vessel, the chemical bonds of the PVA film rupture. It safely breaks down along with the decedent’s organic tissues, leaving only clean mineral bone ash and a sterile effluent liquid.
-
Minimum Dissolve Temperature: 65°C / 149°F
-
Operational Compatibility: Engineered explicitly for high-temperature alkaline hydrolysis systems operating at or above 150°F (up to 350°F).
-
Pre-Process Safety: Because it requires a high-temperature threshold to dissolve, it won’t prematurely degrade from standard handling, condensation, or ambient workspace humidity prior to chamber insertion.
No. This product belongs to a highly specific weight class classification: designed to contain fluids, not transport bodies. Because water-soluble PVA film lacks the puncture-resistance and tensile strength of heavy-duty vinyl or PE-SCRIM, it does not feature carry handles.
Best Practice: The deceased should be transferred using standard removal equipment. The PVA bag should be applied at the facility or placed on the tray directly inside the process chamber to line the vessel and cleanly contain internal fluids.
It dramatically lowers their environmental footprint while optimizing workflow. Because the bag is completely chlorine-free and PVC-free, it generates zero airborne pollutants and requires far less machine fuel to process than flame-based cremation cycles.
Furthermore, having an option between a robust Single #10 C-Zipper closure or a fast-sealing adhesive track allows technicians to prepare both human and pet remains cleanly without altering their standard bio-security protocols.
